linux basics

LINUX is an open source version of UNIX like operating system. It is free.Linux is basically a kernel developed by "Linus Torvalds" in 1991.
Linux comes bundled with softwares from GNU. GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix.
The GNU project was started in 1983 by "Richard Stallman" and was aiming to create a "unix compatible software system" which contains only free software.
By early 1990's "stallman" had almost every application ready for use like text-editors,unix-shell,compilers etc. But low-level utilities like kernel,daemons etc were not ready.
So "linus torvalds" wrote a kernel in 1991 and along with the help of GNU the whole operating system was complete. Means applications from GNU and kernel and other low-level utilities from "linus torvalds" and in combining the efforts of both of them the operating system is called "linux".
It is sometimes also referred as "GNU/LINUX".

Many free popular linux distributions are available today like for eg-->
Ubuntu
Linux Mint
Debian
Fedora
Open suse
Mandriva

Linux is considered as a secure operating system and is used by the servers mostly and also catching up its use among home users with the popularity of "ubuntu","linux mint" and "fedora".

Internet
A computer network consisting of a worldwide network of computer networks that use the TCP/IP network protocols to facilitate data transmission and exchange.

Network
A network is a collection of computers that are connected with each other.
There are basically three types of networks:->
LAN
MAN
WAN

LAN(Local Area Network)
A local computer network for communication between computers. Generally used in schools,colleges,office buildings.

MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)
A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a network that interconnects users with computer resources in a geographic area or region larger than that covered by even a large LAN but smaller than WAN.Generally used to connect campuses,colleges.

WAN(Wide Area Metwork)

A computer network that spans a wide area across the globe is called WAN. Internet is an example of WAN.

Server
A server is a computer to which the client connects and requests for web pages.

Client
A client is a computer which receives web pages sent by the server.

Website
A website is a collection of web pages. Google,Yahoo etc.. are examples of websites.

Webpage
A webpage is a collection of text,sound,video,audio,animation created with the help of web language like html,javascript,css,php etc... which can be viewed in a web browser.

Web Browser
A web browser is a software in which you can view web pages. Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer etc.. are examples of web browser.

Protocols
Rules determining the format and transmission of data is called protocol.

Modem(MODulator/DEMODulator)
Electronic equipment consisting of a device used to connect computers wirelessly or in a wired way(generally through telephone lines).

Computer
An electronic device for processing information and performing calculations.Computer is something that generally computes.
Computer follows a program to perform sequences of mathematical and logical operations.

Hardware
The term hardware means that everything we can see and touch in general.
But technically hardware means the mechanical, magnetic, electronic, and electrical components making up a computer system.

Software
Software controls hardware.Softwares are written programs, procedures or rules and associated documentation pertaining to the operation of a computer system and that are stored in read/write memory.

Network
A collection of computers over geographical area is called network.It is interconnected system of computers and other devices.
There are three main kinds of network:-->LAN,MAN and WAN.

Operating System
An operating system is a software(system software) that controls hardware and resources and provide common services.
It is through the operating system that the user interfaces with the computer.
Examples-->Linux,Unix,Mac,Windows,etc..
